Baby Driver
Review by Myla Tosatto

Baby Driver Review, Baby - A review from a movie mom!

I went in expecting Baby Driver to be like other creations from the mind of director/writer Edgar Wright. I thought maybe this was his new Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, or perhaps a fresh spin on Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. But I was mistaken. Baby Driver is its own thing. Different to those movies, yet sharing some of the humor and bite from them. That’s not to say that you won’t find some love for movies that came before it like Bullitt or the Fast and Furious franchise or even Bonnie and Clyde scattered throughout it. But again, it’s its own particular movie. For instance, I don’t remember Steve McQueen using a choreographer.

Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a young man who owes a debt to a high stakes criminal, Doc (Kevin Spacey). Baby repays this debt by being the driver in Doc’s heists. He drives criminals Griff (Jon Bernthal), Buddy (Jon Hamm), Darling (Eiza Gonzalez), JD (Lanny Joon), Bats (Jamie Foxx), and Eddie (Flea) around while they commit crimes. There is a love story between Baby and a waitress, Debora (Lily James), weaved into this movie. All this happens while Baby listens and reacts to the music that he hears on his earphones.

Whether you want to see a Subaru WRX drifting backwards, a Chevy Avalanche driving up along a retaining wall and getting stuck under a moving truck, a vintage purple Caprice burning and turning, a vintage Chevy Blazer and a new Charger police car trying to push each other off a ledge, or a Challenger Hellcat outrunning the bad guys, this movie has a chase and an action sequence for you.

Sure, it has an abundant soundtrack, young love and a surprisingly creepy take on a baddie played by an unusually charming actor, but go for the car chases!

About Baby Driver:

A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.
