Me Before You Review

I wasn’t able to attend the screening and write Me Before You Review! So I sent my friend Tracy who was able to also score some adorable HUE black and yellow striped stockings! Be sure to check out her review below:

As I entered the theatre for the viewing of Me Before You, I was handed a box of tissue and a quality pair of HUE black and yellow striped stockings (the reason is for your to find out) You know you are in for a ride when those are the media gifts. And a ride it was. One of my guilty pleasures is classic British romances. From the moment I could truly appreciate creative and thoughtful use of language, I sought out British literature and movies. Me Before You is based on the novel of the same name by British journalist and romance novelist Jojo Moyes (two time winner of the Romantic Novel of the Year). Though this is modern take on the classic form of British romance, it did not disappoint. One of the beloved elements of this type of romance is the initial antagonism. The two romantic leads, Louisa Clark and Will Traynor, start out in opposition over the type of challenge that seems to make a relationship between them virtually impossible. Louisa, or Lou as she’s affectionately called, accepts a desperately needed job to care for a wealthy quadriplegic, and the plot thickens. This plot includes more than potential romance, it also involves quality of life issues that require a bit more from the viewer than does the traditional romance movie.

Louisa is played by Emilia Clarke of Game of Thrones fame, and Will Traynor is played by Sam Chaflin most recently noted for the Hunger Games films. The crisp and engaging acting is just one of the reasons that this movie draws you in (and makes you need a hankie). The dialogue is direct and thoughtful without being insulting or overbearing. After Lou and Will spend a formal evening out, they end the evening with the classic end-of-the night car scene. This could have been filled with over emotional declarations of budding emotion. In contrast, Will simply expresses his desire to prolong the experience by saying, “I just want to be man who’s been to a concert with a girl in a red dress.” And he asks to sit together for a few more moments. Actions are so much more than words in this movie. (WATCH Ms. Clarke’s eyebrows!) But the words are well placed and meaningful. The scenes and the emotion are deepened by a soundtrack of songs from artists like Ed Sheeran, Holychild, and X Ambassadors. I can’t say much more about the repetitive need for tissue without a spoiler alert. The characters, plot and dialogue are so authentic, that spoiling wouldn’t save you from need to wipe your tears, but I still won’t offer any spoilers. I do recommend bringing your own tissues. The theatre napkins will NOT do.
