Adrift Review - Not everything can be sunshine and unicorns.

“We’re probably already dead.” A line said to let you know that you are not in the feel good movie of the summer. And that’s okay. Not everything can be sunshine and unicorns. Sometimes you get big budget Lifetime movies and you just have to sit back and enjoy them! That’s what Adrift is, a motion picture that wouldn’t be out of place on the Lifetime Channel. Luckily, director Baltasar Kormakur had a bigger budget than the ‘Mother May I. . .’ or ‘ I Was a Teenage . . .’ TV fare that shows up on that channel in order to bring this lush movie to life.

Adrift Review - Not everything can be sunshine and unicorns.

This is Shailene Woodley’s movie. Make no ifs, ands, or buts (one “t” in that but even though we see her naked) about it. Her character, Tami, is literally in every scene. Sam Claflin stars as Richard, a boat enthusiast. They meet in Tahiti, fall quickly in love and set out for the adventure of a lifetime (there’s that word again). It’s all flowers and giggles until the perfect storm happens. And it hits in super duper fashion. You will hang on to your seats watching this jarring sea adventure (you will probably also never go on a boat again without a life jacket).

This movie is based on the true life story of Tami Oldham. If you do not already know her story, don’t go looking for it (You know how I feel about spoilers). Go into the movie totally unbiased and unknowing. Trust me when I say you will enjoy what the director and writers (Aaron Kandell, Jordan Kandell and David Branson Smith) had in mind while making Adrift. Make your mind as fresh as the plumeria flowers that weave throughout the movie.
