Movie Review
Ah, to be Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh). Agatha Christie’s most famous character gets to travel to all the most lovely and exquisite places. Sure, murder follows him wherever he goes, but still. . . Branagh’s (actor and director) second time putting on the over-the-top mustache and carrying the distinguished cane takes him to Egypt (via his “superhero” origin story where he saves many lives in WWI and the audience learns the genesis of why he has the fabulous whiskers).
Death on the Nile is packed with characters that are either the victims or the killer or both. No spoilers*. The star-studded cast includes the lovely heiress Linnet Ridgeway (Gal Gadot), her schoolmate Jacqueline de Bellefort (Emma Mackey), Jacqueline’s fiancé Simon Doyle (Armie Hammer), singer Salome Otterbourne (Sophie Okonedo), Salome’s niece Rosalie Otterbourne (Letitia Wright), Socialite Marie Van Schuyler and her nurse (tremendous stunt casting here with comedy duo legends Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French), Dr. Windlesham (an almost unrecognizable Russell Brand), attorney Katchadourian (Ali Fazal), and Secretary Louise (Rose Leslie). Rounding out the cast is Hercule’s friend Bouc (Tom Bateman) and Bouc’s mother Euphemia (Annette Bening). Bouc is the only other cast member from the Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express. He is also the reason that Hercule is on this deathly adventure. You need to see the first movie to enjoy this one, though.
There’s something for everyone in this adaptation of Death on the Nile: beautiful people wearing beautiful costumes, breathtaking scenery, crocodiles and camels, saucy dialog, death, drama, intrigue, and most importantly, dirty dancing that would make Baby and Johnny blush.
*Come on, you know us better than that.
