Dreamworks The Light Between Oceans Movie Review from Myla Tosatto and Enza! I was blessed to not only screen this movie during an advanced screening while in LA for a conference, but I also sent contributor Myla to see this movie! I did give her a heads up of the depth of the movie and to have some tissues ready to go! If you have seen the movie already you will probably enjoy our list of movie quotes.
The Light Between Oceans Movie Review
by: Myla Tosatto
“Things catch up with you at the end.”- Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender).
The Light Between Oceans is a psychological drama set in post WWI Australia. It stars Michael Fassbender as Tom Sherbourne and Alicia Vikander as his wife, Isabel. They live a quiet, lovely, isolated life on the island Janus, where Tom is the lighthouse keeper. They are only missing one thing, a child. After several miscarriages, a baby comes to them in a rowboat manned by a dead man. They decide to raise the child and pretend that she is their own. After several happy years, they meet their daughter’s true mother, Hannah (Rachel Weisz). Tom realizes that the happiness that they have gained has come at great cost to Hannah.
The movie is lush and beautiful from the period costumes to the breathtaking scenery. It is based on a very popular book of the same name by M.L. Stedman. The movie is intended for adults. It would be a fabulous book club excursion or a night out with your parents or grandparents. There are adult themes and scenes and it is rated PG-13. The nature of the psychological crime story led to a robust moral discussion within my attendance group. I like nothing better than a movie that will give you a conversational spark!

Myla could not have written her review any better! The movie is beautiful and definitely had lots of people sniffling! The love between the characters is so strong and powerful as well! You feel for their story and their struggles. It made me really hurt for those who are TTC or have lived with a miscarriage.

In the years following World War I, Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender), a young veteran still numb from his years in combat, takes a job as lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a remote island off the coast of Western Australia. As the island’s sole inhabitant, he finds comfort in the monotony of the chores and the solitude of his surroundings. When he meets the daughter of the school’s headmaster, Isabel Graysmark (Alicia Vikander), in the local town of Partageuse on the mainland, Tom is immediately captivated by her beauty, wit and passion, and they are soon married and living on the island. As their love flourishes, he begins to feel again, their happiness marred only by their inability to start a family, so when a rowboat with a dead man and infant girl mysteriously washes ashore, Isabel believes their prayers may have finally been answered. As a man of principle, Tom is torn between reporting the lost child and pleasing the woman he loves, and against his better judgment he agrees to let Isabel raise the child as their own, making a choice with devastating consequences. DreamWorks Pictures’ “The Light Between Oceans” opens in U.S. theaters on September 2, 2016.
