IrRESISTible Review

I’m not sure if you are aware but there is a BIG election coming up in November. HUGE. Some people
are saying it is the biggest election of our time. Because of this, it makes sense that Jon Stewart would
write and direct the political comedy IrRESISTible in 2020.

Before we go all red team- blue team here, please note that though Mr. Stewart is a political activist, he
doesn’t come out for one side or the other. Instead of making the Democrats looks good versus the
Republicans (or vice versa), he pretty much makes the powers behind the donkeys and elephants look
really bad. BIGLY.

Leading the Democrats is spin master Gary Zimmer (Steve Carell) who touches down in Deerlaken,
Wisconsin hoping to make Colonel Jack Hastings (Chris Cooper) a national political star. Colonial
Hastings has all the thoughts of a liberal but comes across as a conservative. Zimmer sees a way to ease
Democrat thinking into a small midwestern town and therefore learn how to grow the Democrat base in
rural America. Opposing him is the always entertaining Rose Byrne as Faith Brewster helping Brent
Sexton’s Mayor Braun be reelected. Though Faith goes against everything that Movie Myla finds
appalling in politics, Byrne puts on a great show. The funniest moments of IrRESISTible come when Faith
lies just for the sake of lying. Rounding out the cast is Makenzie Davis, Topher Grace, and Natasha
Lyonne.

Sure, Mr. Stewart is heavy handed and preachy at times. I think that’s for the folks in the back who
aren’t paying attention. If you are a political junkie you may feel a little shame directed your way during
the film. Part of the message of IrRESISTible is that politics and the news media shouldn’t be
entertainment. The other, larger message is that money in politics is a mess. In this, I’m going to let the
former host of The Daily Show preach. Those two things have certainly made a divide in our political
system that is hard for the average voter to stomach. SAD.
