Lets geek out a little bit! First of all I LOVE Zootopia! It is one of the greatest animation movies with such a strong messge. Disney Animation Studio is so talented. So when I sat down with Rich, Byron, and Clark from Zootopia…I didn’t want the interview to end. We were actually going to do a drawing lesson next, and ended up only have 2 minutes to draw Judy Hopps. The amount of creativity and research that went into creating Zootopia is amazing. I loved the story line, animation, creativity of this movie so much plus they had some really meaningful Zootopia movie quotes!
About Rich, Bryon, and Clark
Rich Moore & Byron Howard were the directors of Zootopia. He was also the director of Wreck-It-Ralph and was nominated for an Oscar.
Clark Spencer was the producer of Zootopia.
Rich and Clark both worked on Wreck-It-Ralph and Byron worked on Tangled!
Zootopia Rich, Byron, & Clark Interview
Zootopia Challenges
Scale: There was a challenge of scale when creating the movie. They wanted to make sure that each animal was the right scale compared to others. This was just one of the few huge challenges of the movie!
What we spent the majority of time talking about with Rich, Byron, & Clark was the story!?
Story: When they first started working with the story they were writing it when the Fox’s point of view, Nick Wilde. They originally were going to create shock collars for the predators that weren’t necessary but helped the prey feel comfortable because they would change colors. As they went this route, the movie just felt so negative really making you not like the world of Zootopia.
They new that they had a great story talking about bias, but it was getting a little too dark.
Once they changed the point of view of the story coming from Judy Hopps, who wasn’t perfect but a good bunny…the story started making sense.
There are bunch of bonus scenes that discuss the research and the story creation in the Zootopia Bluray! I have had so much fun watching them all!
Favorite Scenes
Favorite Scenes: When you talk to animators, directors, and producers…you really have a blast learning about how married they are to their projects. We had a blast learning about each one of their favorite scenes!
Rich: (Summarized Quote…not word for word.) “Nick and Judy in the gondola when they start to bond. Not just for the scene but it takes me back and I remember the day we recorded it. Nick has to drop his guard and share this very painful moment from the past where he drops his guard. Jason gives full committal to this scene. It was the first scene we recorded before the breakup. We had just filmed a funny scene right before that. He was so vulnerable. The act of creating the scene.”
Byron:(Summarized Quote…not word for word.) “Comedy Scene when Judy goes to Nick and apologizes under the bridge. The writing was really well crafted. Jennifer gave this incredible performance. Jennifer was kind of balling. They recorded it up in Vancouver. The booth was really moody and dark. They had so many great takes to work with. So when you give that take to an animator you hope for the best. (Kira) Kira is a natural animator, I can’t believe that it isn’t a real character. To Byron it is a real character in that scene. Kira was a trainer 5 years ago on Tangled.”
Clark: (Summarized Quote…not word for word.) “The Flash scene. You get see this tiny bit of an idea really grow. They go to parts of the world to show them this scene. The audiences respond in the exact same way. They are laughing at how far they stretch the scene.”
Our conversation with these men were great! I could totally geek out with these three Disney masterminds all day long! Their stories are just all amazing and fun!
