The Magnificent Seven Review – In a Show with Everything But Yul Brynner.

I must admit I am not what one would call a “western” fan.  I literally could name every western I have seen on one hand (though I did name my child after a cowboy, but that is neither here nor there).  I was ready to jump into The Magnificent Seven because of Denzel Washington teaming up with the director, Antoine Fuqua,  who  brought him to an Academy Award for Training Day.  This movie was a far departure from that (even with Ethan Hawke starring in both, as well).  This movie was big, loud, earnest and funny.  Yep, there are big laughs all the way through.   One should never try to restrain Chris Pratt, apparently.  (Be sure to also check out our favorite Magnificent Seven Movie quotes list.)

The movie starts, like most western I assume do, with a bad guy (Peter Sarsgaard) overrunning a town.  The town folk, including Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett),  decide to stand up to the baddie and recruit and then  join the Magnificent 7: Sam Chisolm (Washington), Josh Faraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robiecheaux (Hawke), Billy Rocks (Byung-hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier).  It is a very action packed movie with a lot of violence, so once again, you might want to leave the kids at home.  This is a perfect popcorn  movie , though.  Just sit back and relax.

I really enjoyed this remake of a remake.  Of course, being that I’m not usually interested in westerns, it should come as no surprise that I have not seen the 1960 American version or the original Japanese Seven Samurai.  I think I will challenge myself to do so.  If you haven’t seen them, I’ll go ahead and challenge you, as well.  Let us know what you think of any or all 3 of them in the comments.
