Cats Review - Cats Movie Not Based On The True Story

I just saw Cats, and let me tell you that I am very disappointed in my own feline, Cordelia. Turns out, I got a dud of a cat. Cordelia cannot sing or dance like the cats portrayed in Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical of the same name. What is up with that? She just eats, meows, and cleans herself. She can’t even pirouette or hit a high C. Cordelia also can’t do magic but she does get goofy and sleepy from catnip, so that’s cool. Maybe she just hasn’t met her cat tribe yet like the cats in Cats. See, Cordelia isn’t a Jellicle cat like the Cats’ cats.

Luckily, in the movie, we meet each of the Jellicle cats through a song and/or dance as they are being introduced to the newcomer, Victoria (Francesca Hayward). Victoria looks on as her fellow cats Bustopher Jones (James Corden), Rum Tum Tugger (Jason Derulo), Gus the Theater Cat (Ian McKellen), Jennyanydots (Rebel Wilson) and Macavity (Idris Elba) compete to ascend to the Heaviside Layer as judged by Old Deuteronomy (Judi Dench). Taylor Swift and Jennifer Hudson also get their tabby on as Bombalurina and the Memories belting Grizabella. This is the ‘plot’. Fur real.

This movie is NOT based on a true story (I know, right?). It is based on a poetry collection by T.S. Eliot called Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. It is currently the 4th longest running show on Broadway (though not currently running). If you have never had a chance to see the show on stage, now would be a super time to catch it to see what all the fuss is about.

I imagine that performing arts, animal, and Taylor Swift loving children will want to see this movie. It is rated PG, so it sounds like a wonderful movie to see over the break!

Cats is produced by Debra Hayward, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Tom Hooper. The screenplay is by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, Rocketman) and Hooper, based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot and the stage musical by Lloyd Webber. Cats is executive produced by Lloyd Webber, Steven Spielberg, Angela Morrison and Jo Burn.

One of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, the stage musical “Cats” received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981, where it played for 21 years and earned the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical. In 1983, the Broadway production became the recipient of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and ran for an extraordinary 18 years. Since opening in London in 1981, “Cats” has continuously appeared on stage around the globe, to date having played to 81 million people in more than fifty countries and in nineteen languages. It is one of the most successful musicals of all time.
