So when it comes to being in a relationship and communicating, I find that I am pretty darn good at it. I don’t say that much about anything lately, but when it comes to communicating I can do it. This blog post is brought you by my partnership with Christian Mingle but all opinions are my own! I have been in a successful relationship for 19 years, I work full-time with lots of people every day and then I spend my evenings communicating online with thousands of engaged readers and social media followers. Here is what I know about communicating and here are some fun great conversation starters to have on a first date!
Sometimes Communication Doesn’t Come Naturally
Conversation starters can be cheesy but darn are they necessary. A lot of relationships start off strange. Perhaps you have something to ease your tension, find a commonality, or have help with situational circumstance events happening around you. Either way, not every relationship has a comfortable start of a conversation where you can just communicate forever and ever without any issues. Communication has to be learned in each relationship that you have. Whether it is a romantic relationship or even a friendship.
Communication and getting to know each other can also be tricky. Sometimes communication seems to just flow like crazy at the beginning and all of a sudden it is dead. Nothing seems to be there anymore.
So what I am saying is that sometimes communication doesn’t come naturally and that is OKAY. What is important is that you get to know the person you are communicating with and you find or create a chemistry that works for the both of you.
As you thinking of great conversation starters to have with someone you just met remember that I believe it is best work with layers! Don’t dive into the questions that are really personal at first, you will have your date and new friend running away from you. Start off with general topics that are less personal and as you get more comfortable with each other see where your conversation goes. It also isn’t an interview and be sure that you listen better than you speak. Everyone wants to be heard whether you are working toward a serious relationship or a friendship.
List of Conversation Starters to Have on a First Date
1. Tell me about yourself.
2. What are you goals? Future?
3. How did you get to where you are now (work, personal, location)?
4. Where have you traveled? Where would you love to travel?
5. Who are your biggest influencers in life?
6. What is a typical week for you?
7. What shows have you binge watched? Share about entertainment.
8. Tell about family. Are you close to your family? What do they do? Where are they from? Etc.
9. What are your favorite things to do in this city?
10. What are some things you have on your bucket list?
Remember that speaking doesn’t have to happen all the time. Find activities to do together that you enjoy. Go to a sporting event, watch a movie, go on a walk, check out a local museum, etc. Just know that how every you get the conversation going that sometimes communication is great at first, sometimes it isn’t, and sometimes you have to work toward it. These are all OKAY. Also, sometimes (and MANY people do) communicate different online and on the phone then they do in person. Some people just do better at keeping a conversation going different ways. Christian Mingle is a website that serves as tool and an introduction to future and potential relationship.
