The Hitman’s Bodyguard
Review by Myla Tosatto
Remember the good old fashioned action adventure comedy movies where Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte teamed up to take down baddies in 48 Hours? Or Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones came together to police the naughty space aliens of Earth in Men in Black? Or when Danny Glover and Mel Gibson work together as opposites to bring down drug smugglers in Lethal Weapon? The action! The male bonding! The memorable one-liners! That’s what we have with latest from Patrick Hughes’ The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) is a down on his luck bodyguard entrusted with the safety of criminal Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) who must be kept safe in order to testify in International Court against a crazed dictator, Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman). The action is off the charts (and pretty violent). The male bonding works brilliantly because Reynolds and Jackson are such charismatic fellows. Who wouldn’t want to bond with them (even as the whole world is shot up around them)? And the one-liners? Oh my. They are terribly funny and horribly wicked. The violence is enough to keep the kids at home, but the language really seals the deal. This is more of a fun popcorn date night situation. That being said, the cussing is multilingual and I picked up some new words and phrases. Who says that you are too old to learn new things? Not me! To spare you and your delicate eyes, I have kept them out of the “quotes” portion of the review.
My husband wanted me to point out that this movie does not feature Kevin Costner or the late Whitney Houston. The song, I Will Always Love You, does not swell up in the background at anytime.
Shameless Movie Theater Plug- the Shawnee B&B will be showing this movie in MX4D which makes you a part of the movie. This state of the art theater lets you experience the film with rollicking seats that perform many features that stimulate the action on the screen. Check it out! Just a hint- it would be a great way to see a movie with a notorious film napper but perhaps not the way to go when enjoying a large popcorn and soda.

The world’s top protection agent [Ryan Reynolds] is called upon to guard the life of his mortal enemy, one of the world’s most notorious hitmen [Samuel L. Jackson]. The relentless bodyguard and manipulative assassin have been on the opposite end of the bullet for years and are thrown together for a wildly outrageous 24 hours. During their raucous and hilarious adventure from England to the Hague, they encounter high-speed car chases, outlandish boat escapades, and a merciless Eastern European dictator [Gary Oldman] who is out for blood. Salma Hayek joins the mayhem as Jackson’s equally notorious wife.
