Movie Review

Ridley Scott is an absolute master of bringing the Colosseum to life overwhelming you with its enormity and grandeur while simultaneously feeling remarkably intimate. Sixteen years after the battle between Commodus and Maximus cross swords in the Colosseum ended with Maximus declaring that Marcus Aurelius’ dream of returning power to the senate and the people of Rome has crumbled. The great city is on the verge of collapse as brothers and Co-Emperors Geta and Caracalla demand that Marcus Acacius expand the Roman Empire into India and Persia.

You’ll instantly hate the Emperors, be skeptical of Macrinus, and root for Hanno as he attempts to avenge his wife and city that General Acacius stole on behalf of Geta and Caracalla. Gladiator II features the enormity and grotesqueness of Gladiator, with ruthless battles and disregard for life that mirrors that of the Roman empire. The thirst for blood is palpable, and the battle scenes are violent, gory, and destructive.

Gladiator is my favorite movie, and I didn’t understand how they would make a sequel that built on the first. I dreaded the idea that this would tarnish the first, but it does not. I loved it, but now it’s not for kids. But if you liked the first you will like this movie. It is a movie, I heard people afterward complain about the sharks, and maybe that was a step too far, but I have to remember, it’s an epic! I like the idea of embellishing some of the details to make them more grand. I loved this movie, and sincerely can’t wait to see it again!

About the Movie:

“From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome. Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.”
