Hustlers Review
By Myla Tosatto
Hustlers opens to Janet Jackson’s Control*. I couldn’t think of a more fitting song to start this movie. The ladies are in control so sit back, relax and be entertained by a very sexy flick! ** This ain’t your mama’s Showgirls!
In 2007 Destiny/Dorothy (the always terrific Constance Wu) starts working at a strip club to pay her bills and help her ill grandmother. Destiny is a smart girl but perhaps needs a little help in the stripping business. After watching Ramona (Jennife Lopez***) dance her INCREDIBLE opening sequence to Fiona Apple’s Criminal (WHOO WEE!!!), Destiny smartly positions herself to make friends with the stripping legend. Ramona instantly takes her in and a dangerous yet beautiful friendship is born. Most movie goers will focus on the caper antics of this movie and that’s great. It’s a crime movie with beautiful women making rich men their targets but the movie is so much deeper than that. It delves into how beautiful female relationships can be. Destiny and Ramona share a true loving bond that is not often portrayed in modern storytelling. I credit director Lorene Scafaria’s script based on Jessica Pressler’s magazine article. Hustlers is based on a true story. Wu and Lopez (along with Lili Reinhart and Keke Palmer) portray actual criminals.
I know you are going to ask about Cardi B and Lizzo’s appearances in this movie. So here’s a quick note: Cardi B uses her brash boldness to give Destiny a lesson in. . . well, let’s say dancing and Lizzo is her cute irresistible self (flute and all).
Personally, I can’t WAIT to see how this movie plays out at Oscar time! That is going to be a show in and of itself!!!
*The whole soundtrack is INSANE. Take it for a listen.
** NOT kids friendly
*** The woman that Jennifer Lopez plays is actually thinking of suing the actress for her portrayal of her in this movie. Holy cow. If (or who am I kidding, when) they make a movie of my life please, please, PLEASE cast Jennifer Lopez to play me. And while you’re at it, just have Ms. Lopez play me as she does Ramona (without the crimes and drugging and stuff). If JLO doesn’t get her Oscar nom for Hustlers she will surely get it for Movie Myla’s life story.
Hustlers follows a crew of savvy former strip club employees who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients. The film is inspired by the article published by New York Magazine entitled “The Hustlers at Scores” written by Jessica Pressler.
“Hustlers” has been rated R for pervasive sexual material, drug content, language and nudity.
